Local online plant stores for your garden enthusiast friends

Welcome to part two in my gifting blog series! I’m compiling a three part series of gifts/experiences that would be perfect for a loved one, lover or friend. The first part was all about scented bougie candles and now we’re talking local online plant stores and nurseries for your gardening enthusiast friends (#plantgang).

I never used to care about plants or flowers, but then I turned 25 and life happened. Now I have six (and counting) in my room and we have at least 20 in and around our house. Anyways, a lot of us don’t have the time to be in nurseries but we want plants. I’ve compiled a short list of online plant shops you can check out.

The nice thing about living in this city, is that people love plants. Located in the city centre, Plantify has a wide selection of plants that works for any plant parent. You can pick from low-light, easy-to-care-for or bigger plants that’ll suit your space. They have some delivery options for locals and you can pick your plants up from the Kloofnek nursery. Who doesn't love a good Fiddle Leaf Fig? Here are some of our #toptips to keeping your Fiddle Leaf healthy & happy:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 1. Light, light, light! You should keep your Fiddle Leaf out of direct sunlight, but it does need bright, indirect light. The brighter, the better! And when we talk about light, we mean natural light from the sun. No matter how bright the lights are at your office, artificial light will not be good enough! For even growth, turn your tree a quarter turn every few weeks.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 2. Watering: While it may be tempting to mother your plant & water it at every opportunity, Fiddle Leaf Figs (like most indoor plants) don't need daily watering! We suggest watering your plants about once a week in summer & reduce watering to about every two weeks in winter. You want the soil to be LIGHTLY moist to the touch and allow the top layer of soil to dry out a little during winter⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 3. Clean the leaves: As plants use their leaves to make food, it's good to clean the leaves regularly to clear them of dust. Use a damp cloth to do this. BONUS: your leaves will look so deliciously fresh afterwards! ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 4. Say NO to drafts. Fiddle Leafs are native to tropical regions and are not keen on drafty windows & doors. Drafts cause the plant to dry out & develop unsightly brown, dry tips. Keep the Fiddle Fig out of drafts caused by air-conditioning and fans.⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 5. Try to find the perfect spot for the tree, that keeps it happy and leave it there! Sure you can take it to the sink for water, or into the shower for a sprinkle, but try not to move it around the house often, as each time you move it to a new place the plant has to adapt to the environment which causes stress & eventual leaf drop⁣⁣ .⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ 6. PRUNING. The best way to control where you want new branches grow out simply 'notch' the main trunk just above your selected leaf nodes on the main trunk (each node should produce a new branch). How to notch: make a shallow cut halfway around the trunk above the leaf node. This cut should be 2mm deep (about the thickness of a toothpick). You can also cut the main trunk and anything from 1 to 3 new branches will grow…

If you told me five years ago that I would become a flowers kinda gal, I would have laughed at you. But thank God, my mind changed and I buy flowers when I can. Petal&Post is a Cape Town-based flower delivery service with fresh posies available five days a week. They have same-day delivery and offer a monthly subscription for those wanting to treat a loved one (*cough cough* – me). A new developments is that the company has started offering deliveries in JHB and Cape Town. You can order online and delivery costs will vary depending on area.
